Havanese Puppies For Sale

The Havanese originated in Cuba, and by the early 1800s, they were gracing the laps of many aristocratic families across the island. European travelers who fell in love with the breed brought these dogs back to England, Spain, and France. By the mid-1800s, the Havanese was very popular in Europe. During this time, some of its well-known fans included Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens. The popularity of the Havanese eventually died down, and the breed nearly became extinct – even in its native land of Cuba, where very few families still kept and bred them. In 1959, many of these wealthy families fled Cuba and made their way to America. With them, were 11 Havanese dogs.

In the 1970’s an America couple fell in love with the intelligence and affectionate nature of the Havanese. They tracked down a few of the descendants of the 11 original Havanese that made it to America, and through years of dedicated breeding, they were able to reestablished the breed. In 1996, the Havanese was recognized by the AKC.

The Havanese makes an excellent lapdog, but a terrible watchdog. They are affectionate with everyone – including strangers, children, and other pets. They are extremely loyal and will stick to their owner’s side like glue. The potential downside to this is that when left alone for extended periods of time, the Havanese can become very anxious. The Havanese is intelligent and highly trainable. Its long, silky coat ranges from straight to curly and comes in a variety of colors, including: black, white, sable, tan, and grey. It sheds little to no hair and requires daily brushing as well as regular grooming.

Today, the Havanese is considered a fairly uncommon breed in the United States. Although we’ve been carrying Havanese puppies here at TeaCups, Puppies & Boutique for nearly 2 decades, they don’t come in nearly as often as most of our other breeds.
